Yarra Community Friends

Get involved Refer a friend

Good Shepherd Youth & Family Service is now recruiting volunteers to spend at least two hours per fortnight to help improve a young person or child's life.

We are looking for volunteers from the City of Yarra to be matched with young people and children who have limited adult role models in their lives. The aim is to provide these young people and children with responsible adult mentors with whom they can share experiences, have fun and learn about life.

How it works

Yarra Community Friends spend at least two hours every fortnight for a minimum of 12 months with the young person or child they are matched with. Activities are based on shared interests and take into account the needs of the young person or child.

Activities can vary; it's the relationship that matters.

Who can be a Friend

Friends can come from all walks of life and all backgrounds, but MUST live in the City of Yarra. Friends can be culturally, religiously and ethnically diverse, male or female, single people, retired people, working people, from a range of age groups and with different interests.

We provide ongoing training and support for all Friends.

Building trust

As you gradually become a trusted Friend to the young person or child, they will feel empowered to confide in you and learn from you. We hope that they will eventually learn to trust their own strengths too.

As a Friend, you will build bridges within your own community. You will invest in a young person's life. And you will make a positive difference in their world.
